Buddha preaching the Law. Tang Dynasty, early 8th century, silk (Ch.liii.001)
This painting represents the Buddha preaching under an elaborated baldachin, with the jewelled branches and leaves of the bodhi tree in the background under which he attained enlightenment. He is encircled by four sitting Bodhisatvas and six monk-disciples. The figure sitting at the bottom of the picture, on the left side is the donor.
